Local time
The Hague is the seat of government, not the capital. The Binnenhof is the historic centre of that government. What is open around it changes during building work, so check the city’s own pages before you plan a walk through the courtyards. The Peace Palace is in the city and is not the parliament. Scheveningen, the North Sea beach, is a tram ride from the centre, not the centre itself. Delft and Rotterdam are short train rides. The wind off the sea is part of the day for more of the year than a summer poster suggests.

South Holland
Local time
The old centre was destroyed in May 1940 and the city that grew back is modern on purpose. The Erasmusbrug crosses the Nieuwe Maas to Kop van Zuid, which is a different base from the streets north of the river: newer buildings, a longer walk to the market halls, and a metro or tram when the weather turns. The port is one of the largest in Europe and most of it is not a visitor promenade. Rotterdam and The Hague share a metro line. Amsterdam is under an hour by train in ordinary conditions. Confirm NS for the day you travel.

North Holland
Local time
Most first visits start at Centraal Station and walk into the canal ring. That ring is a UNESCO area of houses, bridges, and bikes, and it is crowded from late morning. The Jordaan and De Pijp are how a lot of people actually stay: a neighbourhood street, then a tram when they need the station. Schiphol is southwest of the city, a train ride, not a walk. The canals are not a place to drive. Bikes have the right of way you do not expect if you are new to them. Rain is ordinary. A room on a main canal is a different night from a room on a side street one bridge away.

Utrecht
Local time
Utrecht is the country’s rail junction. If the trip includes more than one of these cities, this is often the easiest place to change trains. The Dom tower is the medieval landmark. The nave that once joined it to the church collapsed in 1674, so the tower stands on its own in the square. The Oudegracht runs below street level, with wharf cellars that are now cafés. The centre is smaller than Amsterdam’s and easier to cross on foot. Amsterdam is about half an hour by train. The university calendar changes how full the terraces feel.

Limburg
Local time
Maastricht is the southern city of this set, on the Meuse, close to both Belgium and Germany. The centre around the Vrijthof and the Sint Servaasbrug is compact and old. Limburg is the hilly part of the Netherlands. Sint Pietersberg and the caves are a plan, not a stroll from the square. Dutch is the language of signs. Limburgish is what you may hear as well. The train from Amsterdam is a long intercity, on the order of two and a half hours, not a Randstad hop. In winter the river city can look quieter than the summer terraces suggest.
